CAA is a group that provides social spaces for people who are a-, grey-, and demi-sexual or romantic. We host regular lunches, an annual picnic, and march in Pride.
Asexuals and aromatics are under-represented in popular media and within the LGBTQIA+ community. When you say the word 'gay', everyone knows what you are talking about. However, very few people have a basic understanding of what it really means to be asexual or aromantic-- or that a-spec identities exists, are a valid orientation and part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Therefore, outreach and education are important to those who fall within the asexual/aromantic spectrum. The Calgary Aces & Aros group allows us to be visible, to represent who we are and to spread awareness.
Our group provides a valuable and safe space for a-specs to form community in Calgary through public and private events as well as communities on social media. Our group exists to affirm that:
What is A-spec? - is the umbrella term for anyone who experiences little to no romantic to sexual attraction. This includes aromantics, asexuals, as well as demis, and greys. Unlike people saying they are gay or bi, a-specs rely heavily on the split attraction model and often feel the need to specify both romantic and sexual attraction since they aren't presumed to match. *For allies looking to connect, we host several open houses a year to allow the public to meet a-spec individuals and answer questions in-person.
