About

For over 50 years, Elizabeth Fry has offered a hand up to thousands of women in the Calgary community, providing practical programs, basic necessities and connections to community resources, all with the goal of creating more hopeful futures. Hundreds of years ago, this was the vision of Elizabeth Fry, a passionate advocate for those without a voice and a champion of prison reform for women. We are honoured to carry on her legacy.

Our Mission -  The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary offers pathways to healing, through supports and advocacy, for women and marginalized populations who are affected by systemic social issues which can contribute to criminalization.

  • Affordable Housing - A stable home is essential for women who are making a fresh start.  The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary works in partnership with Calgary community agencies to provide safe, affordable housing for women. We also welcome the opportunity to work with local landlords who have affordable housing where our clients can be reunited with their families and live together under one roof. Having a home where their children can visit or live permanently is an imperative factor in successful integration into the community. For More Info Click Here

  • Immigrant Legal Advocacy - Immigrant women are often vulnerable, alone and do not understand Canadian law or our way of life. Our Legal Advocacy Programs provide individualized supports to women and their families, who fit the liminal gap between paid and subsidized services by assisting with legal information, understanding and filling in legal documents and applications, navigating the filing processes and providing appropriate resources. In the regional areas, this service has been extended to support low income males and youth. Our focus with this program is on retaining family connections and reunification of immigrant families. • Court Programs - The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary knows that the court system can be confusing and overwhelming, and a criminal record can make it difficult to secure future employment or housing. Our court liaisons and volunteers assist youth and adults in the criminal court. They provide legal information regarding plea options and processes, as well as assist individuals with referrals to legal and community resources. For More Info Click Here

  • Indigenous Cultural Supports - We offer resources unique to Indigenous women, who represent nearly 50% of the women engaged with the Elizabeth Fry Society’s Prison Community Outreach Program in mid-2019. Elizabeth Fry engages Indigenous women in case management supports, programs and ceremony designed to increase their cultural identity, address intergenerational trauma, and encourage healing.  Women can address their personal issues by talking with Elders individually or by sharing in healing circles. They are provided with cultural teachings, monthly sweatlodges, as well as other indigenous ceremonies based on season and availability. For More Info Click Here

  • Prison Community Outreach - The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary’s Prison Community Outreach Program assists women during their incarceration and as they transition back to the community upon release. Upon release, Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary case managers assist women through intensified case management supports. These supports address the core issues behind their incarceration in order to increase their opportunity for stabilization within our community. We focus on addressing the issues associated with intergenerational trauma, offering a variety of resources and supports to enable Indigenous and non-Indigenous women to begin the healing process.  Women have access to traditional, spiritual and cultural activities that contribute to their path of healing and wellness.
